
The X10 ((Skydio)
Most of the companies in this series were built for the battlefield from day one.
Skydio wasn’t.
In 2014, three MIT robotics graduates working out of a basement turned down an intriguing approach.
Da-Jiang Innovations (DJI), the Shenzhen company that builds the majority of the world’s drones, was eager to license their autonomy software.
Adam Bry, Skydio’s co-founder and CEO, remembers how DJI took the ‘no.’
When we decided not to, they made it very clear they were going to try to crush us — that with the support of their government, they were going to try to kill us.
A decade later, Skydio is the largest US drone manufacturer, valued at $4.4 billion after an April 2026 Series F. Its drones fly reconnaissance for the US Army, are deployed in Ukraine, and answer 911 calls over American cities.
This is the story of how, and why, Skydio bet on themselves, and of the rival that shaped it from the start.
The Technology
Skydio makes small autonomous drones. More than that, it makes the software and hardware that let an organization run fleets of them at scale.
The drones are ordinary enough at a glance: a foldable outdoor quadcopter, the X10, and a smaller model for indoors, the R10, each with high-resolution color and thermal cameras.
What sets them apart sits inside.
Six navigation cameras and an onboard NVIDIA computer let the aircraft map its surroundings and dodge obstacles by itself, so the person flying can watch the mission instead of the sticks.
Around the aircraft sits the rest of the program. An X10 can live in a weatherproof Dock that launches, lands, charges and offloads its footage with no pilot on site.
Their own software layer runs the flying, the fleet and the data.

It’s pretty horizontal technology. It’s like building a computer — you can use it for all kinds of things. It’s really the software that defines how you interact with it and what the capabilities are.
That’s the differentiator.
Skydio builds the whole stack: airframe, sensors, autonomy software, dock, cloud, and control apps. Customers buy one supported system instead of bolting a drone, a dock, and three pieces of software together from separate vendors.
It’s also the key to how Skydio, as a humble start-up, could take on DJI in the first place.
Rather than out-manufacture the Shenzhen giant on hardware and price, Skydio competes on autonomy and software.
The same platform works for very different buyers.
The military X10D is the X10 with tactical radios and navigation, designed to keep working when GPS is jammed or spoofed — not jam-proof, but harder to blind.
Utility, construction, and maintenance companies get thermal cameras and repeatable inspection routes.
Police get the dock, the dispatch link, and autonomous capabilities for rapid first response.
One core product, many uniforms.
Critically, the autonomy is supervised: it flies the route, but a person still decides where to go and what the visual feed means.
War and Peace
On the civilian side sits Drone-as-First-Responder.
Skydio says its platform has processed more than 10 million 911 calls, with over 1,200 public-safety agencies as customers.
Bry says San Francisco saw a 42% drop in auto theft after deploying drones alongside license-plate cameras.
Utilities and departments of transportation use the same aircraft to inspect infrastructure that would otherwise put a person on a pole or in a helicopter.
In March 2026 the US Army placed a $52 million order for more than 2,500 X10Ds. That’s the largest single-vendor tactical drone order in Army history.

Skydio defines itself as truly dual-use, rather than a defense company borrowing civilian tech.
Companies like Anduril and Shield are standing up defense-focused companies harvesting the best civilian tech. We’re a little bit different — we are dual-use ourselves. The same core drone we sell to an energy utility is very similar to what a soldier needs on the battlefield.
Defense is growing fast, Bry told Decoder, “but it’s actually a shrinking percentage of our overall business, because other things are growing that much faster.”
Stress Test
Skydio won the Army’s short-range reconnaissance program in 2021 and built its first enterprise drone, the X2, to that spec.
When the war in Ukraine came and everyone needed drones, Skydio sent X2s to the front. They failed.
The things we’d done to meet the US Army spec weren’t just unhelpful — in many cases they actively made the system worse.
The radio was easy to jam, and nothing in the Army’s spec had called for flying without GPS. As it turns out, these are two of the things that matter most on a front line defined by electronic warfare.
So Skydio rebuilt the aircraft as the X10, flipping its priorities and chasing what worked in Ukraine over what the Army had written down.
Through European partners, Bry says, it has since put thousands of the rebuilt drones into Ukraine. And, unlike the X2, they’ve kept flying through the jamming and GPS-spoofing that defines the war.
Made in China?
Everything comes back to DJI. It’s the reason Skydio let the consumer drone market go, and a yardstick it measures itself against.

Strategically, Washington’s stance toward China and Chinese-made tech has been a mixed blessing for Skydio.
Tailwind
Washington’s moves against DJI — the Countering CCP Drones Act and Section 1709 of the FY25 NDAA — are closing US government and public-safety markets to Chinese drones.
That opened a lane for an American-made alternative, and Skydio stepped up. By July 2026 its entire lineup sat on the Pentagon’s Blue UAS Cleared List.
Backlash
The danger is the flip side of being the anti-DJI champion. In 2024, when Skydio sold drones to Taiwan’s National Fire Agency, China sanctioned them and choked their battery supply (the one component it had not yet moved out of China).
Government officials literally showed up at any component vendor we had in China, shut them down, took the tools and equipment — and in some cases took people into custody.
Bry’s public line held: “We’re proud to support Taiwan, and we are undeterred.” And since then they haven’t backed down. Recently, in April 2026, they announced a $3.5 billion commitment to US manufacturing ‘to ensure the future of flight is built in America’.
Net Assessment
Skydio is betting that their tech, and American manufacturing, can beat Chinese hardware on quality and scale production to meet the growing demand from both civilian and military customers from across the West and its allies.
A decade in and the bet is paying off. Skydio is delivering at scale unmatched in the West, and the campaign against DJI has handed it a coveted role as the (sovereign) drone capability provider of choice.
But the battle that shaped what Skydio is today could also be its undoing.
Beijing has shown it will reach across the Pacific to choke a supplier, and DJI still owns the low end on price and volume.

The dual-use identity is also a potential fault line. Serving the Pentagon, a city police force, and a Ukrainian brigade under one logo works only as long as the tech underpinning it all has true overlap for all types of customers.
Whether Skydio stays the American-made standard in the industry, or is pulled apart by the breadth of its ambition, is the story to watch.
